Fire Tears Through Barn in Brooklyn

Brooklyn, Conn. (3/9/23) — A barn was a complete loss after a fire spread rapidly through it on Thursday morning.

At approximately 11:15 am on Thursday, March 9th, 2023, Mortlake Fire Company’s 1st alarm assignment was struck for a reported barn fire at 263 Allen Hill Rd.

According to Mortlake Fire Company’s Deputy Chief Leo Berube, units arrived to find a well-involved barn, with a header visible for miles. Additional tankers were requested, in addition to the 1st alarm assignment, due to a lack of hydrants and suitable water holes in the area. Crews had the fire under control in less than an hour.

Crews were required to stretch 100–200 ft of hose in order to reach the fire due to soft ground surrounding the structure causing trucks to sink.

A small brush fire started on the neighboring fire as a result of the structure fire but it was rapidly extinguished and was monitored for the duration of the incident.

Chief Berupe went on to thank his mutual aid companies for their response, especially during the middle of the day.

The barn was not currently being used to house any animals.

Mortlake EMS was standing by on the scene but no injuries were reported.
