1 Dead After Head-On Collision With Trooper

Chaplin, Conn. – A woman has died after a head-on collision with a trooper’s vehicle on Route 6 Wednesday night.

At approximately 5:33 pm on Wednesday, December 21st, 2022, the Chaplin Fire Department, along with mutual aid companies, were dispatched for a reported two-car head-on Motor Vehicle Accident (MVA) with entrapment and fire, with a State Police Trooper involved, in the area of 392 Hampton Rd (Route 6). Upon arrival, units confirmed that a single occupant was trapped in their vehicle but there was no active fire.

The Connecticut State Police (CSP) Trooper is reported to have been trapped in his vehicle but was able to self-extricate prior to the fire department's arrival.

According to the CSP a Nissan Maxima, operated by a North Windham woman, was traveling westbound on Route 6 when she crossed over the double yellow line while attempting to navigate a curve in the roadway, striking a Ford F-350, operated by a CSP Trooper, traveling eastbound in the right-most lane of two. Following the impact, the Ford F-350 left the roadway and rolled onto its side.

The occupant of the Nissan Maxima was entrapped in her vehicle with apparent serious injuries. A Life Star air medical helicopter was requested and responded to a nearby landing zone from Backus Hospital, Norwich CT. Crews worked for approximately half an hour to free the woman from her vehicle. As soon as she was freed, she was transported to the waiting Life Star helicopter at Parish Hill High School, by EMTs and a paramedic. Due to the severity of her injuries. medical personnel made the decision to transport her by ground ambulance, with Life Star personnel and the paramedic onboard, to Windham Hospital, Windham CT. While en-route, the ambulance was diverted directly to Hartford Hospital Trauma Center, Hartford CT. The CSP confirm that the woman succumbed to her injuries at Hartford Hospital.

The State Police - Collision Analysis and Reconstruction Squad assumed investigative responsibility of the collision. Any witnesses to the collision or the moments prior to the collision are asked to contact Sergeant Mark DiCocco at mark.dicocco@ct.gov.
