Thompson, Conn. - At approximately 6:30 pm on Tuesday, August 10th, the Quinebaug Valley Emergency Communications dispatch center received a call reporting a tree had fallen onto a dinner party with multiple people trapped under the tree. Dispatchers immediately dispatched the West Thompson and Muddy Brook Fire Departments (under West Thompson's mutual aid agreement), as well as multiple ambulances from various agencies and numerous paramedics. As units arrived on the scene and evaluated the situation additional ambulances and paramedics were requested totaling five ambulances and 4 paramedics. Units spent approximately 20 minutes, working with chainsaws, extricating all of the trapped individuals and allowing them to be transferred to the care of Emergency Medical Services. As the patients were freed from beneath the tree, EMS personnel were able to assess their injuries more thoroughly and quickly released a number of the paramedics from the scene to return to covering the Quinebaug Valley region. The scene was cleared in just under an hour with one person transported at the Advanced Life Support (ALS) level and five others transported at the Basic Life Support (BLS) level. All patients were transported to Day Kimball Hospital in Putnam Connecticut.
